LL191 requires all office buildings to install CO detectors by 7.1.21

[DEADLINE EXTENDED] A new bill approved by City Council on December 17 2020 extended Local Law 191's deadline from January 1, 2021 to July 1, 2021.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless and invisible gas that can lead to accidental poisoning and death. Known as the “silent killer”, carbon monoxide kills more than 400 Americans each year. Following the death of a restaurant manager in 2014, New York State enacted legislation requiring all commercial buildings and indoor places of assembly install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors by June 2015.

Local Law 191 expanded the DOB’s rules for the placement of carbon monoxide detectors to require all Class B office buildings to comply by July 1, 2021. Additionally, the law applies retroactively to existing buildings that are equipped with fire alarm systems and contain Group A-1, A-2, A-3, Group B, or Group M occupancies.

To comply with the law, building owners and managers must ensure that their CO detection system plans and specifications are designed and installed according to code and the work must be filed appropriately with the FDNY prior to the July 1, 2021 deadline.
