New Jersey News: New Jersey Requires a New Permit for Emergency Generators

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is announcing a new general permit under its Air Quality Permitting Program. The permit is a General Permit for Emergency Generator(s) Burning Distillate Fuels (GP-005A).

This general permit replaces the current general permit (GP-005) for Emergency Generator(s). This new permit requirement went into effect on May 19, 2014. GP-005 is no longer available for use by new registrants.

Emergency generator(s) currently registered under GP-005 can continue to operate until:

  • The registrant’s current general permit expiration date, before which time the registrant must register for authorization under GP-005A, as applicable, or apply for and receive approval for a source-specific permit and certificate for continued operation of the emergency generator(s).

Or:

  • The emergency generator(s) equipment is replaced or modified, before which time the registrant must register for authorization under GP-005A, as applicable, or apply for and receive approval for a source specific permit and certificate prior to operation of the replaced or modified emergency generator(s).

General Permit (GP-005A) for Emergency Generators Burning Distillate Fuels allows for the construction, installation, reconstruction, modification and operation of:

  • A single emergency generator burning distillate fuels with a maximum rated heat input to the burning chamber of less than 100 MMBTU/hr.
  • Multiple emergency generators burning distillate fuels with a combined maximum rated heat input to the burning chamber of less than 100 MMBTU/hr.

The emergency generators registered in GP-005A are allowed to operate, during an emergency as defined by this general permit, at various locations throughout the State of New Jersey.
