Connecticut News: Anticipated Building Code Update Will Change Toilet Requirements

According to building department and state officials, an update to the Connecticut Building Code is in the works, which will change restroom requirements in mercantile spaces.

The current code calls for separate men’s and women’s restrooms for mercantile businesses with occupancy of 15 or greater. The amended code will require only one unisex restroom.

The update is intended to increase usable net floor space, while reducing construction costs and the maintenance burden on businesses and tenants. The change is expected to have a significant impact on small, boutique retail shops across the state of Connecticut.
